Sculpt:
Gragra the Gorgmonger operated her modest cart in the Mos Espa market in THE PHANTOM MENACE. An imposing female of the Swokes Swokes species, she's dealt with shoplifters before. When a hungry, accident-prone Gungan named Jar Jar Binks swipes some food from her stall, however, it leads to a nasty confrontation between Binks and the hot-tempered podracing Dug, Sebulba. This is the first version of Gragra ever made, and the sculpt is very accurate. The large, cumbersome costume worn on-set featured a rather intimidating, tooth-lined mouth, which has been dulpicated nicely. It rates a 9 out of 10.
Paint:
The figure's head is molded in a pale flesh tone, with dark brown eyes, horns, and mouth interior. Her pupils are black, and a protruberance at the back of her head has a gray wash. Her teeth are ivory, and a reddish-brown wash has been applied to the head to bring out more detail. The upper arms are molded in a medium brown to match her loose-fitting top, with the exposed flesh painted pale flesh. The right arm has a brown band with metal hoops painted silver; the left arm has a decorative brown leather piece, also with small, silver-painted hoops. The forearms and hands are molded in pale flesh, with light gray fingernails. The torso is molded in the medium brown of her top, with pale flesh paint applications to the areas of exposed skin. A line of warty bumps just below her neck are a coppery brown. A portion of her apron on the torso is painted dark gray. A large apron covers her skirt on the lower torso portion, molded in dark tan with medium brown and dark brown paint apps. Her legs and pelvis are a single, non-articulated piece beneath the skirt, molded in light olive, with a gray wash applied to her bare legs and dark, glossy green on her toenails. The cleaver is molded in black, with silver paint apps to the blades. The trio of lizards are molded in light green, with medium green, black, and red paint decorations. This is one involved paint scheme, and rates 9.5/10.
Articulation:
Ball-jointed neck with hinged lower jaw, and ball-jointed shoulders. The wrists, waist, and right elbow are all planer-cut joints, with an angle-cut left elbow. This is a very decent amount of articulation for a figure that was a briefly glimpsed character, and the play value here rates 8.5/10.
Accessories:
Character-specific figure stand, cleaver, and "gorg": 8.5/10.
Packaging:
The same The Saga Collection card as the rest of the series, with a character-specific background image--in this case, an exterior of the Mos Espa market, including Gragra's cart. The insert image is a nice close-up shot of Gragra, and has The Saga Collection logo to the right of the character image. The figure's name is just below TSC logo, with its collection number (Gragra is Saga #052) just to the right. To the left are the five white-orange triangles, indicating the position of the enclosed mini-figure. The cardback features a small film image of Gragra at her cart, with text that explains her role in TPM, along with the diecut display area for the Exclusive Hologram Figure: 8.5/10.
Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for over a month and it sells out quickly and often; it is also available from most online sources: 6/10.
Conclusion:
Gragra is another background alien that is a new, unique character. Although not given any real screen time, and certainly not integral to the plot of THE PHANTOM MENACE, it's always nice to get a new alien! 8.3/10
