Sculpt:
Young moisture farmer Luke Skywalker, as played by Mark Hamill, dreams of leaving the boring Outer Rim world of Tatooine for a life of adventure when we first meet him in A NEW HOPE. Soon, he's drawn into a conflict that will have repercussions throughout the entire galaxy. This figure is based on scenes eventually cut from the final release print of ANH. In early scenes, Luke can just barely make out with his macrobinoculars the conflict in Tatooine's upper atmosphere between the Rebel Alliance ship TANTIVE IV and an Imperial Star Destroyer. He races to Tosche Station to tell his friends of the space battle, but is ultimately distracted by the arrival of his friend Biggs Darklighter. The figure has Luke in his poncho and floppy hat from those cut scenes. The figure itself is an amalgamation of two previously released figures: The body of the 1999 POTF2 Commtech Luke with T-16 Skyhopper model, and the floppy hat and macrobinocular accessories of the 1998 POTF2 "Flashback Photo Luke". The head is an all-new sculpt, as is the Obi-Wan Kenobi chest. While the figure doesn't look very much like Hamill at all, it's better than the previously released heads for this figure, and rates an 8 out of 10.

Paint:
The figure is molded primarily in ivory, although the head is molded in a light flesh color. The head has sandy brown paint applications to the hair and eyebrows, with white, blue, and black paint apps to the eyes, and a medium brown app to the lips. The exposed chest area on the torso gets a flesh-colored paint decoration, as do both hands. The belt is painted brown, with silver and black details in various areas. The boots are medium brown, with faint lighht brown dry-brushing to bring out the sculpted details. The soles of the boots are black. Luke's hat is also ivory, with brown goggles that have "clear" (white-painted) lenses. The macrobinoculars are molded in silver, with no paint decos (unlike the POTF2 ones, which were gray with silver decos). Obi-Wan's chest is molded in brown, with a dark brown wash to "age" it; inside are sculpted-in details of Obi-Wan's lightsaber, rebreather, training remote, headset, and cloak, all painted appropriately: 9/10.

|
Articulation:
Planer-cut neck, shoulders, elbows, waist, and hips, with hinged knees. For a retooled POTF2-era figure, this isn't bad, but in comparison to figures from just the past year, it isn't very good: 7/10.

Accessories:
Character-specific figure stand, removable floppy hat, removable softgoods poncho, macrobinoculars, Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber, and Obi-Wan Kenobi's chest. The chest is one of the coolest new accessories in The Saga Collection, as we not only get the first representation of the chest Obi-Wan kept Anakin's lightsaber in all these years, but we see it also contains Obi-Wan's saber, the training remote, his rebreather, his Jedi Starfighter headset, and his old Jedi cloak! Only Anakin's saber is removable, but the rest of the chest's interior is fully sculpted and painted, and looks awesome: 9/10.

Packaging:
The same The Saga Collection card as the rest of the series, with a character-specific background image--in this case, the Lars moisture farm. The insert image is a publicity photo of Hamill, and has The Saga Collection logo to the right of the character image. The figure's name is just below TSC logo, with its collection number (Luke Skywalker is Saga #036) just to the right. To the left are the five white-orange triangles, indicating the position of the enclosed mini-figure. The cardback features a small film image of Luke looking through his macrobinoculars and wearing the dreaded floppy hat, with text that explains his role in ANH, along with the diecut display area for the Exclusive Hologram Figure: 8.5/10.

|
Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for about a month and it sells out instantly, as it is packed just one per case; it is also available from most online sources: 7/10.

|
Conclusion:
The first Luke figure in The Saga Collection basic line ends up being a Franken-figure, but it's not a bad figure when all is said and done. That Obi-Wan chest really redeems a rather feminine facial sculpt and mediocre articulation. Final score: 8.1.
