Sculpt:
Anakin Skywalker, believed by the Jedi Order to be the "Chosen One" who will restore balance to the Force, as seen in REVENGE OF THE SITH. Here, Anakin has renounced the Jedi and pledged himself to the Dark Lords of the Sith. This figure recycles the head of the Anakin III #2 figure. The likeness to actor Hayden Christensen is only passable, as the hairline is too far back, making him sort of look like he has a receding hairline. In fact, it reminds me of Jack Nicholson in THE SHINING. The reproduction of the costume is decent, although the right arm has the sleeve of his tunic tucked into his glove, which isn't film-accurate. Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
Paint:
The paint applications are smooth and clean. The head is molded in pale flesh-colored plastic, with a sandy brown for the hair and eyebrows, pinkish-red for his scar, a medium gray around his eyes, and white, light blue, and black for his eyes. The torso is molded in dark brown, with black for the leather outer robe, and medium brown for the under shirt. The arms are dark brown, the left hand is molded in the same pale flesh-colored plastic as the head. There are two right forearms: the gloved version, which is molded in dark brown with black and silver paint apps, and the robotic version, which is also molded in dark brown and has gold and black paint apps. The soft vinyl overlay for the pelvis is dark brown, with black paint apps for the leather outer tunic, and brown, silver, and gold paint apps for the belt. His pelvis and legs are medium brown, with a dark brown on his boots, and a black wash over that; the soles of his boots are black. His accessories feature his lightsaber, which is painted accordingly (see "Accessories"), and a removable cloak molded in dark brown with some black weathering at the bottom: 9/10.
Articulation:
The articulation on this figure is keyed towards its action feature. The head, waist, legs, left elbow, and left wrist have standard planer-cut joints. Both shoulders are ball-jointed, as is the right elbow. The removable right forearm has a planer-cut joint, and can hold the lightsaber accessory. On my sample, if you use the action feature "slashing attack" too rapidly, you send that lightsaber flying across the room! Also, the forearm pops off too easily, making posing that ball-jointed right elbow problematic, at best: 7.5/10.
Accessories:
Anakin's blue-bladed lightsaber is molded in blue translucent plastic and painted black and silver. His removable Jedi cloak has the hood down, and no sleeves, which is not film-accurate. 8.5/10.
Packaging:
The REVENGE OF THE SITH card is almost triangular in shape, and is diecut on the sides and top. The figure insert image is now separate from the ROTS logo/figure name insert. The background is a field of molten lava behind the figure, with a stylized Darth Vader mask looming at the top, forming the J-hook. Silhouettes of Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling can be seen reflected on the Vader helmet. The insert is for Collection 1, of which Anakin Skywalker: Slashing Attack is figure #28. The insert photo is a new publicity campaign image, and the cardback is yet another new shot from a slightly different angle; neither image comes directly from the film. Oddly enough, both images show Anakin with his hood raised, by the figure has his hood down! The outer clear blister has the "Slashing Attack" sticker on the inside. The cardback shows the figure in "Slashing Attack" mode. 9/10.
Availability:
Upon initial release on April 2, 2005, he was in good supply. I see more of these still on the pegs than the Anakin (III #28) figure ... possibly because this figure has no accessory variants: 9.5/10.
Conclusion:
While this one is a bit nicer than the Anakin III #2 figure, I hate the "raccoon-eyes" look they gave him. At least the action feature works smoothly and doesn't look too spastic: 8.7/10.
