Review

Sculpt:
As the Death Star approaches the Rebel Base on the fourth moon of Yavin, Luke Skywalker is briefly reunited with boyhood friend Biggs Darklighter as they prepare their attack on the planet-sized Imperial Battle Station. Together, they will pilot X-Wing Fighters as part of Red Squadron (Biggs was Red Three, Luke was Red Five). Their reunion would be cut tragically short as Biggs didn't survive the Battle of Yavin IV. The figure is based on the character played by Garrick Hagon in A NEW HOPE. The sculpt is a minor retool of the Dutch Vander (Gold Leader) figure from Hasbro's 2004 Saga line. The all-new head is a good likeness of Hagon, and the repainted helmet fits it well. While it was decent for 2004, the figure really would've benefited from a new body sculpt, with better articulation: 7.5 out of 10.

Paint:
The figure's head is molded in pale flesh, with black paint apps to the hair, eyebrows, and moustache. The eyes are a simple white with black lashes and irises app. The torso, pelvis, arms, and legs are molded in bright orange. The right arm has a glossy black paint app to the gloved hand; the left arm has a glossy black paint app to the gloved left hand, and a silver paint app to the left shoulder. The torso has a white paint app to the vest, with black decos to the holding straps to the chest-mounted control box. His belt is painted gray, with silver details. His right leg has glossy black paint apps to the right boot; the left leg has glossy black paint apps to the left boot, with silver details. The chest box, hoses, and leg straps are molded in gray, with white, blue, silver, and dark gray decos to the box. The helmet is molded in clear orange, with a predominantly white paint app and black, yellow, orange, and gray details. His blaster is molded in black, with a silver deco to the tip: 8/10.

Articulation:
Planer-cut neck, shoulders, right bicep, left forearm, and ball-jointed knees. There is no waist articulation at all: 7/10.

Accessories:
Removable helmet, BlasTech DH-17 pistol, and character-specific collector coin. The sculpt on the coin's front is fairly lackluster, and the likeness to Hagon is sketchy at best: 7/10.

Packaging:
The new 30th Anniversary Collection card uses painted imagery of the characters on the individual cards, with the new STAR WARS logo in stark white and cut in on an angle. It's a design that has divided collectors: you either love the new look or hate it! The film each figure comes from is at the bottom right edge of the card, while the character's number in the collection is on the blister insert. Biggs Darklighter: Rebel Pilot from ANH is figure number 14. The cardfront painting of Biggs shows him without his helmet, but in his flightsuit. The cardback features a film shot of Biggs in his X-Wing's cockpit, and has text that explains the character's role in ANH and a "Character Profile": 8.5/10.

Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for almost two months. It sold out instantly on initial release, but seemed to reach a saturation level early. While not quite the pegwarmer that the Rebel Honor Guard and Death Star Trooper figures became, it's readily available now both at retail and online sources: 8.5/10.

Conclusion:
Not quite the movie-accurate, definitive version of Pilot Biggs that collectors were hoping for, but kids and casual fans will likely be satisfied with this version of him. Now, we just need his Red Three X-Wing Fighter to put him in: 7.8/10.
