Sculpt:
These Imperial Navy troopers were stationed to key positions on the Death Star in A NEW HOPE. Serving aboard the mighty vessels of the Imperial starfleet as well as the awesome Death Star battle station, Imperial Navy troopers are well-trained guards and soldiers charged with a variety of duties. They serve as security, handle hangar traffic control, monitor sensor arrays and perform other tasks when their combat skills are not required. Those assigned to the first Death Star were considered the navy's most elite. This is an all-new sculpt of a rather bland background character, but one that inhabited quite a bit of the STAR WARS universe: 8.5 out of 10.

Paint:
The Death Star Trooper's head is molded in light flesh, and has brown paint apps for his hair and eyebrows. His eyes are white, with brown irises and lashes. Everything else is molded in black: torso, arms, legs, pelvis, helmet, etc. There is a flesh-colored paint app to his neck, and silver apps to his belt. Accurate, if somewhat boring: 8/10.

Articulation:
His neck, shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles are all ball-jointed. Both forearms have planer-cuts where the gauntlets start. His waist and hips also have standard planer-cut joints: 9/10.

Accessories:
The Death Star Trooper comes with a removable helmet, Imperial blaster pistol, and character-specific collectible coin: 8/10.

Packaging:
The new 30th Anniversary Collection card uses stylized "painted" imagery of the characters on the individual cards, with the new STAR WARS logo in stark white and cut in on an angle. It's a design that has divided collectors: you either love the new look or hate it! The film each figure comes from is at the bottom right edge of the card, while the character's number in the collection is on the blister insert. The Death Star Trooper is figure number 13. The cardback features a screen shot from A NEW HOPE, and has text that explains the character's role in it and a "Character Profile": 8.5/10

Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for about seven months, and is available from various online sources. It has become a pegwarmer in many areas, and still readily found at retail: 9/10.

Conclusion:
The Death Star Trooper has been long overdue for a new sculpt, but it's hard to overcome the fact that the character is a bit boring. Still, army-builders and dioramists will be happy to see him, and kids always need more bad guys for the hero figures to fight: 8.5/10.
