Sculpt:
Klatooinian percussionist who, along with the Weequay Ak-rev, accompanies the Max Reebo Band at Jabba the Hutt's palace in RETURN OF THE JEDI. Umpass-Stay and Ak-rev were originally bodyguards to Jabba the Hutt, but when a traveling minstral group sitting in with the Reebo Band tried to assassinate the crimelord, he decided to add them to the band as extra security. Umpass-stay took to the job well, and learned from his bandmate Ak-rev the art of synchronized drumming. Neither were on Jabba's Sail Barge when it was destroyed at the Pit of Carkoon, and the Klatooinian slave was freed after Jabba's death. Both characters were added to the ROTJ SPECIAL EDITION, released in 1997. Umpass-Stay's costume was new, but his head and hands were props stored in the Lucasfilm archives from the original ROTJ shoot in 1982-83. The sculpt is all-new, and features lots of details. Unfortunately, the figure is somewhat pre-posed, and this limits its articulation: 8 out of 10.

Paint:
For a minor background character that was only in ROTJ: TSE, Hasbro went all-out with his painting! His head and hands are molded in light green, with a medium green wash applied to the head. The eyes are white, with blue irises and black pupils. There a medium tan paint app to his snout, and his jutting lower teeth are white. His torso is molded in dark gray, with a light green paint app to his neck that has a medium green wash. His tunic is gray, and his leather corset is light tan with a dark brown wash. His arms are molded in a pale tan, with brown, gunmetal gray, a medium gray paint apps to the metal gauntlets. There are irregular rust paint decos to the gauntlets, and an off-white deco to the "bone" studs on the gauntlets. His belt is molded in a medium tan, with light brown, copper, and off-white decos. His pelvis and legs are molded in the grayish-brown of his pants, with gray decos to the straps at the end of each pantsleg. His shoes are molded in brown, with dark gray apps to the soles. His head wrap is molded light orange-brown, with an off-white deco to the strap. His shoulder armor is molded in the same orange-brown, with gunmetal gray apps to the armor, dark red to the cloth strips, medium tan to the bindings, and silver to the decorative studs. The drumstick has a gunmetal gray handle with medium brown wrappings, and an off-white head with a medium gray wash. The vibro-drum and base half are molded in four pieces. The drum head is molded in metallic copper, and has a light sand paint app to the stretched skin and a light brown wash, with bronze apps to the frame, and red and green decos to the electronic panels on the sides. The base is molded in black, with copper, silver, brown, gray, and black apps. Two hoses on either side are molded in silver: 9.5/10.

Packaging:
The new 30th Anniversary Collection card uses stylized "painted" imagery of the characters on the individual cards, with the new STAR WARS logo in stark white and cut in on an angle. It's a design that has divided collectors: you either love the new look or hate it! The film each figure comes from is at the bottom right edge of the card, while the character's number in the collection is on the blister insert. Umpass-Stay is figure number 27. The cardback features a screen shot from RETURN OF THE JEDI: THE SPECIAL EDITION, and has text that explains the character's role in it and a "Character Profile": 8.5/10

Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for about three months, and is available from various online sources. He's not a very popular figure, appealing mostly to completist collectors and diorama-builders. He's pretty much the main pegwarmer of this wave: 9/10.

Conclusion:
Umpass-Stay is an example of a minor character getting a "spotlight" on him, as the figure is a great sculpt, with insane paint app levels and great accessories. He lags a bit in articulation, but is otherwise quite an achievement: 8.3/10.
