Sculpt:
Sith Apprentice Darth Maul is introduced to the leaders of the Trade Federation via a holonet transmission by his master, Darth Sidious, in THE PHANTOM MENACE. The figure utilizes the mold for the EPISODE I Darth Maul (Tatooine) action figure. Although a decent mold by 1999 standards, seven years has seen a lot of innovations that make it now obsolete. It rates 7 out of 10.

Paint:
The figure is molded in translucent blue plastic and has no paint applications whatsoever. This is a real disappointment, because Darth Maul without his facial tattoos is just boring! 4/10.

Articulation:
Planer-cut shoulders, biceps, waist, and hips. There's no head articulation because of the hood he wears. Wrist articulation would've allowed better battle poses. Considering we never see him wield his lightsaber while in holographic transmission, it's sort of a moot point: 5/10.

Accessories:
Character-specific figure stand and ignited lightsaber: 5/10.

Packaging:
The same The Saga Collection card as the rest of the series, with a character-specific background image--in this case, the bridge of a Trade Federation warship. The insert image is a photo-manipulated short of Darth Maul (sans cloak), and has The Saga Collection logo to the right of the character image. The figure's name is just below TSC logo, with its collection number (Holographic Darth Maul is Saga #048) just to the right. To the left are the five white-orange triangles, indicating the position of the enclosed mini-figure. The cardback features a small film image of Darth Maul as a hologram, with text that explains his role in TPM, along with the diecut display area for the Exclusive Hologram Figure: 8.5/10.

Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for three months and sells out quickly; it is also available from most online sources: 6/10.

Conclusion:
A better figure than the previous solid, pre-posed hunk of plastic from the EPISODE I Light-Up Holograph line that were Wal-Mart exclusives. But, even at that, it's an obvious rush job that, given a bit of paint and some slight retooling, could have been just as good as the EPISODE I Hologram Darth Sidious figure: 5.9/10
