Sculpt:
Smuggler and Rebel Alliance hero Han Solo, as seen after being freed from his carbonite-block prison in RETURN OF THE JEDI. The sculpt is a vast improvement over the Power of the Force 2 "Jabba's Palace Diorama (with Han Solo in Carbonite)" version from 1998. The level of detail has been greatly improved, and the He-Man-esque wide shoulders and buff torso are gone. The facial likeness to actor Harrison Ford is also a vast imporovement over the old POTF2 version, and looks to be closely based on the Vintage OTC figure's head sculpt. 7.5 out of 10.

Paint:
The figure's arms and torso are molded in the off-white color of his tunic, while the pelvis and legs are molded in the brown of his paints. The head and hands are molded in flesh, with the head painted the brown of his hair and eyebrows, and black and white for his eyes. The neck is painted to match the flesh color of the head and hands. There's a yellowish stain on the front of the tunic (sweat? vomit? carbonite residue?). The boots are painted black, as is the belt. There is a cream-colored stripe down each pants leg. The eyes are just a bit off ... not sure if this is supposed to represent his temporary blindness or what, but my figure looks like his eyes are rolling back into his head. The force pike is molded in silver, with a gunmetal gray paint application near the base. The carbon block is molded in silver and fiery orange, with silver paint applications over most of it. When light shines behind the block, the orange sections "glow," simulating the thawing process ... although not too convincingly: 8/10.

Articulation:
Ball-jointed neck, with planer-cut shoulders, wrists, hips, and waist, with angle-cut elbows. Considering the level of articulation given to recent figures of lesser characters, Hasbro really could have given us either ball-jointed knees or shoulders for one of the OT's main heroes: 7/10.

Accessories:
Character-specific figure stand, force-pike, and carbonite block. The pike is made from such rubbery plastic that it invariably ends up bent. The carbonite block is far too small -- the Han figure is exactly 3-3/4 inches tall, while the figure sculpted into place in the block is only 3-1/2 inches tall. The block itself is just 4 inches tall: 7/10.

Packaging:
The same The Saga Collection card as the rest of the series, with a character-specific background image--in this case, the exterior of Jabba the Hutt's main sail barge. The insert image is a nice close-up shot of Harrison Ford clutching his force pike, and has The Saga Collection logo to the right of the character image. The figure's name is just below TSC logo, with its collection number (Han Solo is Saga #002) just to the right. The cardback features a small film image of Han's face thawing out from carbon block, and has text that explains the context of the scene in ROTJ, along with the diecut display area for the Exclusive Hologram Figure: 8.5/10.

Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for about four months. Along with Bib Fortuna, Han is the pegwarmer of this wave, and sells slowly at retail; it is also available from most online sources: 9/10.

Conclusion:
Although this version of Han thawed from the carbonite is better than the '98 one that came with the Jabba's palace diecut diorama, Hasbro could have done better with the carbon block accessory. 7.8/10.
